(If not you’re missing out on HD) I wrote in my book ‘How to Choose the Perfect Glasses’ about the three steps involved in getting the best vision possible. Most people think there’s just one – your prescription. So you get your eyes tested, get a prescription, put it in a pair of glasses… and away you go.
But there are two other factors that can be equally as important. Those are; the lenses you choose and; the way you’re measured for your new lenses in your glasses (you can find out more about this here).
For this blog, I’ve been given access to famous German lens manufacturer ZEISS’ white papers and ZEISS Germany’s Communications Director, Joachim Kuss, to explore the advantages of tailor-made lenses.

(Robert Sands): I think most people think that all prescription lenses are ‘individually made’. What do we mean by a truly individualized lens?
(Joachim Kuss): We distinguish mass-manufactured stock lenses – for correction of refractive errors a lens is chosen which comes as close to the prescription as possible – from individualized lenses. Those are calculated and manufactured on basis of the prescription and therefore correct individual aberrations in a tailor-made manner. Data from 1,500 measurement points flow into the lens design and higher order aberrations are considered (these are extremely small details within your eye that can affect your vision – Robert). This can make a big improvement to contrast and color vision.
So “truly individualized” means tailor made for each eye and its visual impairments – calculated and manufactured as unique items. Available for both, single vision and varifocal lenses.
(RS): What aspects of your vision can be improved by Zeiss Individual lenses?
(JK): Sphere, cylinder, axis of course (these are the components of a normal prescription – Robert) – but with a hitherto unknown precision. Higher Order Aberrations are considered in lens calculation as well centration, fit of the frame to nose, face and physiognomy as well as individual life style in lens design (work, leisure, driving, sports, use of digital devices etc.).

There are a huge amount of benefits to individualised lenses.
Do individualized lenses only benefit those with complicated prescriptions?
No, also single vision or varifocal lenses for “non-complicated” prescriptions can be individualized. Each eye is different – so should be each lens.
How does the iTerminal help us to manufacture individualized lenses?
The best individualized lens is only of best use if fitted precisely to the frame. Furthermore individual parameters like physiognomy, face etc. can be considered in the lens design – all data we get from centration. So ZEISS individual lenses are only available when prescription includes ZEISS i.Terminal or i.com mobile data – otherwise we would not tap the full potential of individualization and thus limit the optical experience of the lens wearer.

To conclude, individualised lenses allow you to correct your vision to a much greater accuracy, resulting in improvements from better night vision, to better peripheral vision, and even better 3D vision. Whilst there are several lens manufacturers producing individualised lenses, Zeiss have the experience and the technology that sets them apart.
